Southwest Travel Club On The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

March 1, 2010

Southwest Travel Club would like to introduce you to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, otherwise known as the WHTI. The WHTI is a law implemented by the United States Government that requires all travelers to show a valid passport or other approved secure document when traveling to the U.S. from areas within the Western Hemisphere. It stems from the act called the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act which was signed in 2004 disallowing travel within the U.S. or abroad without prior governmental approval. Of course these new measures are the direct outcome of the attacks on September 11, 2001 on the United States. Southwest Travel Club would like to explain more about the WHTI and how it impacts your travel outside the U.S.

In reference to the Western Hemisphere, we are discussing the impact on only travel to the U.S. from the following nations named specifically by the U.S. Department of State:

  • Anguilla
  • Antigua and Barbados
  • Aruba
  • The Bahamas
  • Bermuda
  • British Virgin Islands
  • Canada
  • Cayman Islands
  • Dominica
  • Dominican Republic
  • Grenada
  • Jamaica
  • Mexico
  • Montserrat
  • Netherlands Antilles
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Turks and Caicos
  • Since 2007, all persons traveling by air from these nations must present either a U.S. Passport or passport card or a WHTI compliant document. The following documents represents a WHTI compliant document which will be accepted:

  • Trusted Travel Cards
  • State Issue Enhanced Driver’s License
  • Enhanced Tribal Cards
  • U.S. Military ID with Military Orders
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Documentation
  • Native American Tribal Photo ID
  • Form I-872 American Indian Card
  • The goal of WHTI is to “strengthen U.S. border security while facilitating entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors by providing standardized documentation that enables the Department of Homeland Security to quickly and reliably identify a traveler”. Southwest Travel Club would like to encourage you to stay informed of current laws, rules and regulations which are put in place to protect you as a United States Citizen. If you keep this in mind while you travel, your trip both in and out of the U.S. should go smoothly and without incident. Southwest Travel Club invites you to travel and enjoy your next vacation both in the United States both in our beautiful country and abroad.
